How to find the time to do the things you want? (106 days to go)

Monday, June 22nd, 2009

time-management-clock.jpgPeople often ask me how I find the time to do everything that I am doing, with relation to my business interests, family, friends, social and sporting activities. Well, the truth is that I have my days when I don’t have time to do everything I want!  I think it boils down to a fundamental - you have to MAKE TIME to do the things you love to do.

Do I make time to do everything I do all the time? Maybe not at first, but I always find a way to be grateful for whatever situation I am doing. Do I like cleaning the toilet? No, not until I realise how lucky I am to have a toilet! Imagine not having a toilet and having to go in the bushes all the time?! Reminds me of being back in Africa… (haha only joking). See how much we can be grateful for! :-)

How to get more time out of your day:

  1. PRIORITISE - Write down the things you want to accomplish everyday and then prioritise them. Don’t be afraid to limit yourself. You’ll soon find out what your actually capable of every day.
  2. BE TRUE TO YOURSELF. You are more likely to complete things if they mean something to you. As we have previously covered, your time is your most important asset, so be careful what you commit to. You need to view your time as valuable, because if you don’t then neither will other people.
  3. GET UP EARLY! No one seems to like step! Well, if you’re not willing to make some changes to your life, then you’re not going to get any different results - it’s that simple. What if you work full time? How will you get time to do those other things that are important? Why not get up 30 minutes earlier each morning to focus on something that’s important to you? Work on your new business idea, pick a hobby, spend time with your kids if they’re awake!
  4. DO THE LITTLE THINGS - make sure you put the little things on your list of stuff to do. Not only is a great and encouraging to tick off items on your “to-do-list”, but sometimes the little things can have a big effect on your day.
  5. KNOW YOUR GOALS - Like I’ve said before, it’s important to know where you want to go. Write down your goals and put them somewhere where you can see them daily. This way you can put some simple steps on your list, which will get you closer to the achievement of those goals.
  6. EXERCISE - If you’re anything like me, you’re thinking - I’m already so busy, how can I fit more into my hectic day? Well, to start with, you’re going to need some more energy! So why not start off your day with a run/swim/yoga/Pilate’s/brisk walk? It’s amazing what even a quick walk can do for your energy levels, creativity and problem solving skills!
  7. MAKE TIME FOR YOUR ONE THING - For me this is my family. Everyday I make sure that I fit my family in to my life. Whether it’s helping out with bath time, reading stories, taking them swimming, going for a walk, or even taking them for a drive. It’s awesome to spend time with my kids and wife, and this is something that has the ability to re-charge me and ensure that I am always committed to achieving my goals.
  8. HAVE FUN! I know it sounds cliche, and it probably is. The truth is, that like anything in life, if you’re not having fun doing something, there’s little chance of you continuing to do those things. If you’re having fun, while you cram more into your day, then you’re going to keep doing it, which means you’re going to achieve more!

Those are some of the practical things that I do in my days. Please feel free to add some tips in the comments section on what works for you.

Have a most excellent day! :-)

Kind Regards

How to fundraise with no funds! (163 days to go)

Sunday, April 26th, 2009

Wow, what a weekend it has been! So many things happening, with just under ONE WEEK to go until I find myself running the Rotorua Marathon

In my effort to raise ₤10,000 in just 10 days, I’ve contacted everyone from CNN, to Tony Robbins! I’ve emailed CEO’s and social networked like there’s no tomorrow, so here are some of my tips, which have actually generated some great results.

How to Fund Raise on a limited budget:

  • Setup a fundraising page. For something in NZ I would use, www.fundraiseonline.co.nz, and for overseas I would use www.justgiving.com. These organisations give you the frame work to donate directly to your chosen charity and don’t cost anything to get started. To see my justgiving page, click here.
  • Upload a video on Youtube, supporting your charity. This is a great way to get your message across through one of the most powerful visual mediums. Don’t be afraid to try something different to make your video stand out.
  • Contact your local newspapers. They usually jump on a story about something wanting to do some good in this current economic “doom and gloom” climate. It could be as simple as sending an email to the editor….you never know what will happen.(right column, about half way down)
  • Get some free press. Try sites like www.free-press-realease.com and you can get something like this in no time at all. This can give you some massive leverage.
  • Use your social networking sites, such as facebook and setup a group for your charity. Invite people to join and ask that in exchange, they donate a small amount to the cause.
  • Open a Twitter account and start tweeting! This is new to me, but so far I’ve connected with some amazing people, including Tony Robbins, Larry King & Hugh Jackman! You can follow me on www.twitter.com/kiwimillionaire
  • Lastly, and by no means leas, EMAIL EVERYONE YOU KNOW AND THOSE THAT YOU DON’T KNOW! Include some info about what you are trying to achieve, who you are raising funds for and how they can help (include link to donate, and/or forward email to their contacts). Don’t be afraid to go to the top, email CEO’s, people making the news, celebrities.

You really can achieve so much with the power of the internet, combined with people’s passion. The only thing that is stopping you, …. is you.

If you got some value from this post, please help me with my Charity - Stop the Traffik,by donating whatever you can afford to www.justgiving.com/ryankilfoil. Thanks for your support and all the best with your efforts :-)

How to Generate Cashflow (196 days to go)

Tuesday, March 24th, 2009

One of the most important things we can focus on in today’s economic environment is cash flow. It’s all good having customers, but if those customer’s aren’t paying you immediately, then you have to worry about recovering those payments so that you don’t go belly up and become an all too familiar statistic.

As part of my goal to achieve $1 Million dollars in 365 days, I have had to come up with a range of different strategies and projects to contribute to my ultimate goal. The interesting part of this journey so far, has been that, while my ultimate goal remains the same, the ways I want to achieve it have changed.

When I started I wanted to make a Million Dollars by any means possible. Now, I want to make a Million Dollars by helping other people achieve success in their lives. Some may think that this has made my goal even more difficult, however it has actually done the opposite. Now I have more passion, more reason to achieve my goal, and I’ve never been so excited to achieve it!

One of the challenges I came across, is that I needed capital, sometimes only small amounts, to get some of my ideas off the ground. As I was working a day job, I had to think f another way to get some more money on a regular basis.

How to Generate Cashflow:

  • Blog. It’s the way of the future. What are you good at? What do you know everything about? What do you want to achieve. Just visit wordpress or an associated blogging platform and sign up - it’s free. Then start blogging and soon your style will evolve and you will capture your niche audience. Then you can start making money with a whole host of activities such as Adsense, Affiliate marketing etc etc…
  • Start a business. Now this doesn’t need to be anything too technical or complex. I’m talking something here that will generate sales and cash flow from day one. For example, say you purchase macadamia nuts in bulk, then package them into smaller bags and sell them for a profit. Now maybe you already have a day job - so you employ someone else to sit on the side of the road with a sign and sell nuts. If you can make the numbers work, you could potentially be earning a few hundred extra every week. Now maybe you could use that money to invest in your next, bigger business idea and so forth.
  • Sell stuff. I mean your stuff. Have a garage sale - C’mon - you never really liked that couch anyway!? We all have something lying around home that we don’t use anymore and it’s probably worth something to someone else. You can hang on to it for that day when you might decide that you would like to use it again - I guess it all depends on how much you want to get your ideas into action. If you can sell Late Aunt Betty’s Silverware to better your future and that of your families - I’m sure she would be proud!
  • Get an Investor. If you don’t have the money - find someone who does! Find someone you can trust and who has money, and tell them about your idea. They could invest a certain amount in return for shares in the company, or you could loan money from them to get started and decide to pay it back by a certain date, with interest.

“Sometimes it’s better to get a small percentage of something, rather than 100% of nothing”

So go and get stuck in! If you have an idea that you want the world to know about, there’s no excuse not to go ahead and do something about it right now! You’ve got some ideas on how to get some cashflow happening so that you can invest in your idea on a regular basis and bring it to fruition.

Is now the time to buy? (263 days to go)

Sunday, January 18th, 2009

As much as I would like to go on about the current state of affairs in the world, I’m not going to. The thing that matters for me, is the current state of affairs in my head.

Currently I am looking at purchasing another business. Since the liquidation of Paymex, I have had countless businesses ideas, both good and bad. Although I don’t really think any of them are bad ideas, perhaps just not the right time for me to attempt to carry them out.

Then I remembered - “There’s no need to re-invent the wheel”. I began to search for existing business opportunities where I felt that I could use my skills to turn a business into a profitable well-oiled machine. Similarly to what Michael Gerber talks about in the E-myth.

So what do you look for? If someone had a profitable business why would they sell it? Perhaps for health reasons, maybe stress levels are too much? Is this something you should take on then?

I think that there are a lot of opportunities out there at the moment, where ever you are in this world.  More specifically in the business market. I also believe there are vast opportunities in the property market, however that’s a topic for another time.

What to consider when looking to buy a business:

When you do find something that interests you, you need to do a few things first.

  • Most importantly, you need to do due diligence. This is basically finding out all you can about the business. Go back as far as you can with the financial records, are there any trends, even as far back as seven years?
  • One key factor is that you have to make sure that you understand exactly how the business makes money. If you plan to run a profitable business this is essential!
  • Do you have the skills necessary to run the business effectively? Are you going to run the business yourself or are you going to employ someone to do it for you?
  • Do the numbers. What is your expected ROI (Return on Investment)? What is your strategic objective for the business?
  • What is your gut feeling about it? I believe that this is one of those factors that people often overlook as they don’t believe it holds too much credibility. I firmly believe you should always go with your instinct, or at least listen to it.

So what opportunities can you find in your local business district? Once you find an opportunity that you believe cannot be passed up - do your home work and then make a decision. You should have no problems with finding funding for the existing business, especially when you are buying assets as part of the deal.

Purchasing an existing business (and making it profitable) is a great way to leverage your time and create more passive income streams. You also have the option of selling it later down the track for capital gains. Whatever you decide - remember the main point - to take action! Good luck! :-)

Ways to make money (292 days to go)

Thursday, December 18th, 2008

The internet is jam-packed full of ideas and ways to make money. I believe that some of those ideas work really well. I also believe that others are just out there to confuse you. The difficult part can be deciding which one is worth the time and effort…the question is:

“How badly to you want to make money?”

Take for instance, these guys. It certainly does look impressive? Does it work? I guess you’ll never know unless you try it. So you really have two options. Click the link and decide to give it your all, or continue browsing and reading this blog. Either way - I’m sure you’ll have a great time :-)

Probably the one of the most interesting affiliate marketing promotions is
this one. I would really be interested to hear comments from others who have used these systems.

One last site for you to check out - apparently this is one of the best ones out there! Let me know how you go and let’s get talking about how you’ve found your experience with affiliate marketing!
